Boys Soccer Hails Horde of Graduating Players on Senior Night

18 ... Count Them, 18

There are high school teams with no seniors, some who have just a few seniors and then some who have a lot of seniors.

And then there is the Fairfield boys soccer team.

Eighteen. 18. Eiiiiighteeeeeeen seniors.

That's a lot of seniors!

A roll call, please:

Jorge Silva-Lopez, Carson Runyan, Andrew Money, Brandon Rivas Valenzuela, Riley Cunningham, Elliot Ampomah, Desmond Geh, Gavin Money, Melvyn Bulux Garcia, Cole Miller, Vince Lopez, Aiden Parks, Grayson Hoffman, Estevan Tenorio, Lenny Ekerum, Joaquim Pay, Jose Gonzalez, and Jason Lemus-Salguero.

That made this year's Senior Night a night to remember!

The tables holding senior tri-fold boards loaded with photos were jammed, stretching almost half the length of the field. Announcing all the players before the game took far longer than normal, as all 18 had their bios read as they walked across the field with their families.

A tradition most schools follow is to start the graduating players of their team on Senior Night.  That would be rough with this squad.

So what did coach Manny Adjei do? He asked permission of the referees to start ALL 18 players at the same time. A quick kick out of bounds and the game was on its way (and the excess seven players returned to the bench)!

Making the evening even more festive was that many of the school's international clubs offered free ethnic food to the fans, ranging from tamales to dumplings to noodles and fried rice, in honor of the diverse Fairfield roster.

At half-time, all of the senior parents came out on the field with giant fathead posters of their children and posed in a group shot with the senior athletes.

And, to top it off, the Indians defeated Oak Hills, 4-1, with senior Gonzales adding the icing to the cake by kicking in a long free kick with just 33 seconds to go. His teammates swarmed him immediately, then swarmed him again when he rang the Victory Bell at the close of the game.

The Indians hope to continue the celebration Tuesday when the team begins the first round of the playoffs, hosting West Clermont.

Tickets for the game are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the gate for cash or credit, or online at www.ohsaa.org/tickets. The international clubs plan to once again provide foreign cuisine for the fans.

If the Indians win Tuesday, the 8th-seeded squad will play next at a TBA neutral site Saturday in the district finals against the winner of Tuesday's match between Centerville and Wayne.
